Warning! This content contains light spoilers for the Terminator: Dark Fate movie. If you are a fan of Terminator, you can’t wait to watch the franchise’s newest film, Terminator: Dark Fate. In this film, as in the trailer, there will be a classic meeting between Sarah Connor, played by Linda Hamilton and T800, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
This film is quite boring for me who has watched all Terminator series. If in the previous two films, Terminator: Salvation and Terminator: Genisys the story has been expanded, in this film, we will be trapped back in the same storyline.
Terminator: Dark Fate also has no connection to the two films. The storyline continues from their second film, namely Terminator: Judgment Day and the TV series Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicle.
By the way, before discussing this film further, there are a few things that you should know. Terminator currently has several timelines, starting from the first film, second film, and the TV series referred to as the ‘main storyline’. The rest could be said as an ‘alternate storyline’.
The problem with Terminator: Dark Fate is that it has a whole new future. As is known, Sarah and John managed to destroy Skynet, which is an AI that becomes the enemy of mankind in the future.
Instead, there is a new AI called Legion. Just like the previous story, the legion leader sent a terminator robot to target the human rebel leader who threatened the Legion’s existence.
This time, the main target is Dani Ramos, played by Natalia Reyes. He is an ordinary Mexican factory worker, but is confused after he and his brother are chased by the Terminator from the factory where they work.
Grace, played by Mackenzie Davis, is then saved. Shortly thereafter, Sarah was also on the rescue mission. Finally, they are together to survive.
The storyline is accompanied by a little plot twist, which I expected from the start. However, in fact, if the plot twist is removed, the storyline will not change at all.
This plot twist only exists to emphasize Grace’s main reason for going back to the past only to save Dani. Apart from that, there is no other reason why the story writer included such a plot twist.
In this film, it seems that the writer also wants to show a different feminine toughness. Naturally, the three main characters are all women.
Grace is a military doctor with a tough and self-sacrificing mindset. Meanwhile, Sarah is a person who is tired of the world, and has become a character who knows everything that turns trauma into aggressive cynicism.
Meanwhile, Dani was originally the kind of naive person who always had to be eliminated from every new battle because his feelings were wrapped in sadness and terror. But, at the end of the story, she becomes a strong woman, and doesn’t want to leave anyone to die, even if she has to sacrifice anything.
There are several fresh aspects of this film, namely the latest Terminator model. This robot has several new technological options designed to make the ‘hunting’ in the film more unpredictable.
They also combine two terminators in one body, namely the T2 and the ordinary terminator robot. Yes, the terminator in this film can separate and unite themselves as they like.
In fact, there are some jargon from old films that I was waiting for in this film, such as ‘I’ll be back’, ‘hasta la vista baby’, and the iconic thumbs-up scene at the end of the film didn’t happen. In fact, this can be a special touch for fans of the film.
However, being directed by James Cameron, I already have an idea how this film will be made. Switching storylines, CGI, and more looks flawless with very few “flaws” in it.
Taking pictures is quite interesting. The chase using the helicopter and military aircraft is also amazing. And of course, all the actors who play in this film can really bring out their respective characters.
So, is this film not worth watching? Certainly not. This film will be especially interesting for those who are watching the franchise for the first time. Terminator: Dark Fate has a fairly new storyline, with only having to consume a little information from the previous film.
But, for those of you who have watched all the Terminator films, my advice is that you better sit back and enjoy the film without giving any spoilers regarding the previous film if
