From its first appearances in The Conjuring, Annabelle has haunted and scared horror fans. This doll has gained massive interest from the general public. There are many podcasts and vlogs made to investigate this doll and its allegedly cursed power. Annabelle has left its mark on pop culture, and people can’t seem to have enough of its presence. A spinoff about this doll, Annabelle, was a success, earning $256 million worldwide against its $6 million budget. It is no wonder that the studio is eager to make its sequel. Annabelle: Creation, the sequel of Annabelle, was released in August 2017.
The movie tells the origin of Annabelle. Samuel Mullins, a dollmaker, and his wife Esther are faced with a loss after their young daughter, Annabelle, nicknamed “Bee,” died in an accident. Years later, the Mullins use their home to give shelter for Sister Charlotte and six girls, who are left homeless after their orphanage was permanently closed. One of the girls, Janine, finds a note saying “Find me” in the house and sneaks into Bee’s bedroom, despite being told not to. She then finds a key for Bee’s closet. When she opens the closet, she finds a scary-looking doll and accidentally releases a powerful demon that starts to torments the girls.
This film is an improvement from its predecessor. It still offers bone-chilling moments and classic spooks, while also improving the story-telling and setting. Its background of 60s American Southern, while not fully utilized, gives the film a gloomy atmosphere that permeates throughout the film. Annabelle, while being an inanimate object, is again successful in scaring the viewers with its terrifying look.
Another positive element of this movie is its plot and characters. The plot is simple but effective, with no unnecessary addition to make the story tight and its scare effective. The characters are realized and are interesting enough to follow. This movie is fairly successful in making the viewers root for them and their survival.
To sum it up, Annabelle: Creation is a sequel that might not be essentially needed but still distinctive enough in The Conjuring Universe. It gives you the classic horror movie experience: many chunks of heart-pumping scares and chilling suspense. For fans who are interested in the origin of Annabelle, or just want to get their regular dose of horror, Annabelle: Creation is a fairly good horror movie to watch.
