When film enthusiast hears the news that Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell is starring in a film together, they must feel excited or at least curious about the film. Colin Farrell, a veteran in Hollywood, has starred in many classic films, such as crime-comedy In Bruges, science fiction classic Minority Report, and surreal rom-com The Lobster. Jessica Chastain also has starred in many well-received films, such as Interstellar and The Martian. A movie that casts these two will pique some interest.
Ava, directed by Tate Taylor, is an action thriller film with a star-studded cast of Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, John Malkovich, and Common. Ava tells the story of Ava Faulkner, a trained assassin. The movie starts with Ava killing an English businessman in France. After completing the mission, Ava goes to Boston to visit her sister and mother. Later, Ava flies to Riyadh for another mission to kill a German general. However, the mission goes wrong, and she has to find the truth about the mission to save her life.
Despite the talented cast, this movie is a major disappointment. The first glaring weakness of Ava is its cliché-ridden script. The film has nothing to say and has nothing to offer to the spy genre. The plot does not have any sense of coherence, and the dialogue is offensive and comical in am unironical way. The movie feels like it has been made before a hundred times, and the characters are painfully unoriginal.
The technical aspects are also awful. The action feels incompetent and the editing also does not create a sense of good pacing of continuity. The visuals look unattractive, and the action scenes are decent at best. It does feel like it is created for television, despite its A-list actors. The only saving grace this movie has is Chastain, who is convincing enough in her role as a hardened assassin. The supporting cast disappointingly did not help Chastain in any way.
If you’re looking for a smart and engaging spy movie, you might want to skip Ava. Its generic storyline and bad quality technical aspects will not entertain you and put you on the edge of your seat during the entirety of your watch. There are many spy movies that have better action, script, and dialogue. However, if you’re a fan of Jessica Chastain and want to see her being a badass assassin, then this movie is for you.
