There are several attempts made by Hollywood to rejuvenate the “superhero” genre. For example, studios have produced several R-rated comic book movies such as Deadpool, Venom, and Logan, which brought them moderate success. This “darker” version might not earn billions in the box office, but it is still profitable. Many people are excited to see more.
Netflix is one of the companies interested in earning their bucks from this genre. Netflix is not unfamiliar with the superhero genre. It has produced and released several superhero series such as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, etc. Their library of superhero content is expanded with the release of Project Power, its first Netflix Original superhero movie.
Project Power is set in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans. A mysterious pill that grants its consumer superpower is being distributed illegally in the community. The movie follows the story of three different characters, Newt, a teenager and dealer of the mysterious pill, Frank Shaver, a cop and consumer of the mysterious pill, and Art, a man looking for her daughter. Their stories unfold and intertwine as the movie progress.
Project Power, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, is not just an ordinary superhero movie. It might not be luxurious and extravagant with cutting-edge visuals or grand action, but it is still fairly successful in utilizing its strength. Although the premise might need to be dug deeper to display its fullest potential, there are still some layers of social commentary and several narratives that can be dissected.
The movie also has fairly good performances from its cast, mainly Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who star as Art and Frank Shaver. Jamie Foxx gives its character intense energy and great focus, making him a scene-stealer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays as Frank Shaver, also gave a respectable performance as the cop with a personal dilemma.
It also has exciting action and satisfactory visuals, showing the scenery of several areas in New Orleans, such as the neighborhoods and several landmarks. The superhero abilities showcased in the film also varies, from superhuman strength to crab-related abilities.
In conclusion, Project Power is a welcomed addition to the superhero genre and Netflix’s collection. It is refreshing and grimier than most superhero films, but still fun to watch. There is variety in the superhuman abilities, and the performances of the actors are respectable. The film is guaranteed to keep the viewers engaged and entertained.
